North, is the Arctic Circle, which is mostly ice of varying thicknesses. The Yukon is generally a reference to the Alaskan territories.
Comic Book canon holds that the Fortress of Solitude was originally located somewhere in the Antarctic, where it mostly remained until recently.
It seems as though Smallville canon is locating it somewhere in the Arctic Circle, as (I think) the Christopher Reeves' Superman movies did. I can't remember which one has Polar Bears and Penguins. Some research may be in order.
